Relationship or Couple Counselling

Jill at Abbotsford ConventCouples coming for relationship counselling commonly describe themselves as being at “loggerheads” or in a “stalemate” situation with one another.

Relationship counselling is helpful in getting perspective on a situation, particularly when a couple’s normal patterns of communication are no longer working.

People who have found couple counselling to be effective, have told Jill that it was in gaining new awareness about themselves and their partner, that they have discovered how to maintain a kinder and more respectful attitude and so better able to manage differences as they arise.

The aim of relationship counselling is to gain insight into the interactional pattern in the couple.  In understanding what is causing each person to pull away from the other, many people find they can reconnect in a more constructive way.

When couples come to Jill for relationship counselling, they usually attend together.  To ensure that each individual is heard and validated, each person takes turn to speak about their perspective on the problem.  Jill’s job, as a therapist, is to discover the particular way in which each person’s patterns of thinking, feeling and behaviour is contributing to the unhelpful interactional pattern in their relationship.

Common issues that Jill works with in couple counselling:

  • Unresolved and escalating fights
  • Lack of intimacy - ways to increase love and fondness for one another
  • Infidelity
  • Parenting differences
  • Difficulty relating to one another following a traumatic incident
  • Grief and loss
  • Life transitions – e.g. birth, death, marriage, separation, child leaving home, menopause, diagnosis of a chronic or life threatening disease
