About Counselling and Psychotherapy

People tend to talk to a counsellor when their own efforts at resolving personal problems have not worked.  They may not feel they can share the issue with their friends or family and it is beginning to have a negative impact on their life.

Counselling
Counselling is a shorter process than psychotherapy, where individuals gain clarity regarding specific concerns that are worrying them.  Counselling therapy looks at patterns of thinking, feelings and behaviours that when understood, help people relate in a different way to their challenging situations.

Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy is a more in depth form of counselling therapy in which family of origin and formative experiences from childhood, as well as personality types, are considered as strong influences in current adult functioning.  It is in the context of understanding these factors as well as the correlations between current unhelpful, habitual patterns of thinking, feeling and behaviour that the new understandings can occur.
